Description

Caroling became popular in the 13th century when Francis of Assisi introduced the live Nativity plays in Italy. The people performing in the plays sang songs that told the story of Christmas in their native language and as the customs spread throughout Europe, new songs, “carols,” were integrated into Christmas celebrations. Songs were sung in the streets by groups of people and Carols by Candlelight services were very popular.
