Description

The Ukrainian Santa, St. Nicholas, carries a bundle of wheat to represent an important Ukrainian tradition. Before the Holy Supper, a sheaf of wheat, didukh, is tied in the middle with beautifully embroidered ribbons. This sheaf represents the entire family, departed ancestors and the generations to come. The souls of the family are thought to be in the sheaf, and it represents the Christian belief in an afterlife and the bountiful fertility of the land. St. Nicholas is dressed in the blue and gold colors of the Ukrainian flag. Carols, Kolyadky, play an important part of the Ukrainian celebration, so St. Nicholas brings sheet music. A favorite carol is Boh predvichny. In St. Nicholas’s bag is the calendar number seven, which represents December 7th. This day is the actual day on which Ukrainians celebrate Christmas based on the Roman calendar that had been in use since the eighth century B.C.
