Description

The American version of Santa Claus was inspired from the Dutch legend of Sinter Klaas, brought by settlers who came to New York in the 17th century. The Dutch would wait anxiously for the arrival of Sinter Klaas, wearing a bishop’s attire, on horseback, accompanied by Black Peter (Zwarte) each Eve of Saint Nicholas. Sometimes this gentle man arrived on a boat after he made his way through the canals of Holland. Later, the children put their shoes next to the chimney filled with straw and a carrot. These treats were for Sinter Klaas’s horse. The next morning, when the children wake up, they would find that the straw and carrot had been replaced by a present and candy.

Although this Dutch St. Nicholas is not wearing his bishop’s attire, his is a kindly old man, adorned in white, deep red, green and gold, which are the universal colors of this holy Christmas season. He carries many toys for the Dutch children including a drum, horn and candy, plus wooded shoes and a Black Peter doll hanging from his pocket. The lantern leads him through the villages and the countryside, which always represents the Light of Christ.
