Centuries ago, celebrating Christmas was a holy and festive break from the toil of everyday life, especially in the country where villagers and hard-working farmers labored endlessly to bring food to their families. The Country Santa Claus vists the small rural towns with his wheelbarrow to help him carry his load of gifts. Bells tied to the front of the wheelbarrow announce his arrival. In the country tradition of not being wasteful, Santa wears a coat made from little patches of fabric, much like those on the old  patchwork quilts that country mothers make from leftover scraps. His underskirt is made from a favorite calico.
