Description

Christmas, Britain’s most popular holiday, is celebrated with traditions that go back hundreds of years, many which have been adopted by Americans. Christmas cards, holly and mistletoe, Charles Dickens “A Christmas Carol” and caroling have all made their way into our Christmas celebrations via Britain while we have shared the custom of filling the children’s stockings with gifts on Christmas Eve.

The English Santa carries a bowl of wassail, a drink made up of ale, honey, spices and apples. The word “wassail” comes from an old English term meaning “be well”. Christmas carolers go from house to house with song and a bowl of wassail. In return, people in the houses give them gifts, money or mince meat pies believing they will receive good luck for the coming year.

The English Santa with his bowl of wassail wishes you good luck for the new year!
