Description
The bread that Santa is holding is called Vasilopita, a famous Greek Holiday Cake. It is made in honor of a beautiful act of charity by St. Basil to the poor and needy of his flock. To insure that the needy would have money for life’s necessities, St. Basil had the ladies of his church make sweet breads with coins baked into them. In this way he could give them money without demeaning them at all. The one who receives the coin is considered to be especially blessed for the New Year. The crosses on Santa’s coat are reminiscent of the crosses that adorned St. Basil’s clothing. The Viking Ship represents the many ships that have sailed the Greek Seas. Decorating their Christmas Tree with coins is a tradition in many parts of Greece.
