Pastries, sweets and cookies have long been a delicious part of our Christmas celebrations. However, in early days, these delicacies were a special treat to be enjoyed only by the wealthy and on very special occasions as the ingredients to make them were rare and expensive. With ingredients of cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon, it was made weeks before Christmas so it could “rest” and allow the flavors to meld. In simple households, Mother baked these flavorful cookies right before Christmas. As we bake our own treats to give and to share, the aroma of spices mingled with the freshly cut Christmas greens in our home evokes wonderful memories of past Christmases. The Sweet Santa reminds us of sweet and delicious treats handed down through generations that we enjoy at Christmas time.
